Privacy

The short version

• We keep the books you make: text, layout and the pictures your AI assistant uploads.
• Photos you add so the characters look like real people are used only to draw them. We never share them or train AI with them, and we delete them 30 days after your book's last change.
• When you order, we keep your email and the shipping address, and share them only with our printer and payment provider.
• We measure how the site and the AI tools are used, with cookies and recordings of visits (typed text hidden).
• No ads, no selling data.

What we keep

• Books. The title, the plan and story text your assistant writes, the page layout, and every saved version, so changes can be undone.
• Pictures. The pictures your AI assistant (such as ChatGPT, Claude or Codex) uploads to papergarden: the AI-⁠made images for the book, and photos added so characters look like real people. A photo used only to draw a character is deleted 30 days after the book's last change.
• Orders. Your email, the shipping name, address and phone number (the courier needs it), the number of copies, the price, and the order status. Payment details go straight to Stripe; we never see your card.
• Tax ID. For deliveries to Brazil, Chile and Mexico, the recipient's tax ID (CPF/CNPJ, RUT or RFC), because customs there require it. We share it only with our printer, Lulu.
• Your account (if you sign in). Your email address, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google, so you can find your books and orders again.
• Usage statistics. See Usage statistics and cookies below.
• Technical logs. Our host keeps short-lived request logs (such as time, page and IP address) to keep the service running and safe, and a log line for each step a book goes through and each tool an AI assistant calls (which tool, which kind of assistant, whether it worked, how long it took). These lines never contain your chat, prompts or story text. They are deleted after a few days.

We don't ask for or keep chat history, precise location, passwords or ID numbers.

Usage statistics and cookies

We use PostHog (stored in the EU) to see how papergarden is used. It gets:

• Visits: which pages are visited, where visitors came from (such as a link or an ad campaign), which steps of "make a book" are reached, the clicks and scrolls on our pages, page speed, and errors the site runs into. A cookie recognizes your browser on later visits.
• Recordings of visits (what was clicked and shown on screen) to find what's confusing. Everything you type is hidden, and book links, the payment page and payment details are never recorded.
• Your account, if you're signed in: your visits are linked to it (its id and email).
• About books: counts of what happens to a book (made, first picture, finished, ordered, payment page opened, paid with amount and currency, shipped). These are linked to your account if the book is in your account, otherwise to a scrambled code made from the book that can't be turned back into the book or its link. They never include titles, story text, pictures or addresses.
• Purchases: when you pay, your purchases are linked to you in our statistics by the email you ordered with (or your account): that you've ordered, how many orders, the total spent, and the dates of your first and latest order. If you visited the payment page in this browser, your earlier visits are linked too. If you make an account with that email later, it is linked to your account.

To stop this, block cookies for papergarden.ai in your browser or use a tracker blocker; papergarden keeps working. Email support@papergarden.ai to have your recordings and statistics deleted.

Why we keep it

• Books and pictures: to show, edit and print your book.
• Orders: to print and ship your book, send order updates and a receipt, and keep the records the law asks for.
• Your account: to sign you in and show you your books and orders.
• Usage statistics: to see what works and where people get stuck, and to find and fix errors.
• Logs: to fix problems and stop abuse.

Who else sees it

• Anyone with a book's view link can see that book. The link is long and random, and we don't list books publicly. Only share it with people you trust.
• Your AI assistant (for example OpenAI for ChatGPT) receives what our tools send back while you make the book. Their privacy policy covers your chat.
• Service providers that run papergarden for us: Cloudflare (hosting, storage and our emails), PlanetScale (database), PostHog (usage statistics and error reports, stored in the EU), Google (address suggestions at checkout, and sign-in if you choose it), Stripe (payment), Lulu (printing and shipping, which receives the print files and the shipping address), OpenAI (the pictures papergarden paints) and Anthropic (when papergarden makes the whole book for you).

We don't sell or rent data, and we don't share it for advertising.

How long we keep it

• Books and pictures: until you ask us to delete them.
• Photos: 30 days after your book's last change.
• Orders: as long as tax and accounting law requires (usually 7 years), then deleted.
• Your account: until you ask us to delete it.
• Usage statistics and recordings: recordings for 30 days, statistics only as long as they are useful.
• Logs: a few days.

Your choices

Email support@papergarden.ai to get a copy of your data, correct it, or delete a book, its pictures or your order details (except what the law makes us keep). Send the book's view link so we can find it. We answer within 30 days, usually much sooner.

papergarden is for adults. Children don't use papergarden themselves; a parent or grandparent makes the book.

If we change this policy, we update this page and the date at the top.
