Mila & Pip The Great Backyard Adventure

When the sun peeked through the curtains, Mila was already awake. "Pip," she whispered, "today is an adventure day." Pip wiggled his one floppy ear. He was ready.

Every adventure needs supplies. Mila packed two jam sandwiches, one red flashlight, and her best crayon map. Pip sat on top of the backpack. Someone had to keep watch.

At the back door, Mila took a deep, brave breath. Past the doormat, the Big Wild World began. "Hold on tight, Pip," she said. And off they went.

The grass behind the shed was taller than Mila's knees. "A jungle," she whispered. "Walk like explorers." Somewhere in the leaves, a tiger was watching. It looked a lot like the neighbour's cat.

Then they came to the river. It was wide and wild and at least three puddles deep. Mila crossed on the stepping stones — one, two, THREE — holding Pip high above the water.

On the far shore lay Picnic Island. Explorers eat jam sandwiches. That is just how it is. Pip got the first bite. He always did.

After lunch they climbed the Great Mountain. From the top, Mila could see everything: the river, the jungle, and their whole house. "We are the highest explorers in the world," she told Pip.

But then the wind came. It huffed and it puffed and it tugged — and it pulled Pip right out of Mila's arms! Down he tumbled, down, down, into the deep dark hedge.

"PIP!" Mila called. The rain began to fall. Plip, plop, plip. Her boots were muddy and her hands were cold. But explorers never, ever give up.

And there — under the biggest fern — sat a small, wet, very muddy bunny. "Found you," Mila whispered. It was the best hug in the history of adventures.

Home again, they were wrapped in one warm towel. Outside, the rain tapped on the window. Inside, there was hot chocolate. "You were very brave," Mila told Pip. Pip thought she was braver.

That night, Pip lay on the pillow, right next to Mila. "Tomorrow," she yawned, "we'll go even further." And the Big Wild World waited quietly, until morning.
